The Ins and Outs of Sewing Machine Needles and Thread

We use them every day, but may not really understand the differences and uses of the variety of machine needles and thread in our quilt making and machine quilting. In this one hour lecture, the Needles and Thread section of Sue's Quilting 101A workshop will be discussed in detail, with individual handouts. Everyone, even the experienced quilter, will learn something new from Sue, who has a degree in Textile Sciences.

Classes/Workshops

Quilting 101 A - What you need to know!

A MUST for all quilters! This class is a lecture only, explaining in detail the differences and relationships between sewing machine needles, threads, fabrics, battings, detergents, and other quilt-related products. Sue has a degree in Textile Sciences from UC Davis, and shares her extensive knowledge in a simple and understandable explanation of these basic products, which all quilters use, but don't really understand. This class will affect every quilt you make from this point on!

½ day class - all levels

Landscapes/Pictorial Quilts - Curved Machine Pieced

This class is an introduction to the curved machine piecing technique for landscape and pictorial quilts. In this class, students will cover design techniques, fabric choices, marking, sewing and pattern development working directly with fabric. To simplify and allow more time for learning these techniques, Sue has designed a simple landscape pattern (22" X 28") of a Single Tree Landscape, available to students in this class. By utilizing this pattern, students will immediately begin learning the process of working on landscape quilts without taking hours to design an individual piece.

In the two-day workshop, the morning will be spent completing fabric choices (if not completed on day one), and sewing techniques for curved piecework. In the afternoon, Sue will discuss border options and quilting designs to enhance the Single Tree small quilt, and discuss student's personal pictorial designs, introducing how to translate photos or pictures into a pattern.

One or two-day workshop - all levels

Paper Foundation Piecing 1

Piecing, using a paper foundation, eliminates time and error. Piecing on a foundation will ensure that points are always perfect and will save time of making templates and precutting fabric. Learn this quick and easy technique working on patterns such as half square triangles, flying geese, square in a square, trees, houses, churn dash, stars and more.

One-day workshop - Beginners in paper piecing

Paper Foundation Piecing 2

Learn Sue’s simple way to enhance your quilts with curved paper pieced borders. Sue’s quilts and clothing with curved flying geese are showstoppers. In class, students will design a wall hanging, learn how to make patterns, and sew these curved paper piecing designs. It may look complicated, but after this innovative class with Sue, it’s made easy!

One-day class - Knowledge in basic paper foundation piecing required

Introduction to Machine Quilting

This workshop teaches students, while working through several exercises, the basics of free motion machine quilting on a home sewing machine. Beginning with simple shapes, students work through many quilt designs such as echo quilting, stippling and other "filler" designs, and simple curves to more complex designs. Class includes discussions of basting techniques, differences in batting, marking quilt tops, comparisons of threads and needles, and quilt binding.

One or two days - all levels
